Saline levels vary extensively from high in the mountains with high rainfall where epiphytic plants grow in the absence of salt to the oceans and desert areas where the salinity may be far greater than that of normal sea water.

Where the salt tolerance of a species is unknown we have taken into account other known plants that the specific plant is known to grow with and have used that as a guide. We have erred on the side of caution there fore some plants may in fact be more tolerant of salts than we have indicated. For example we know that Atriplex nummularia grows in extreme saline conditions and that Ptilotus exaltus grow side by side in many areas. We have erred on caution and placed Ptilotus exaltus under very saline soils, because of the wide soil variation of Atriplex nummularia and Ptilotus exaltus. The act is Ptilotus exaltus maybe more tolerant of salt than we have allowed for.

Citrus trees are salt sensitive and growth is severely inhibited with salinity levels over 400 Ecgw (mS/m) parts per million or 1.6dS/m.

Most Australian trees and shrubs are considered non saline to moderately saline sensitive. Be cautioned some plants categorized under a bracket may in fact be better placed below that catagory. Corymbia citriodora is rated at 2dS/m to 4.1dS/m which includes it within the non saline top end to moderately saline soils bottom end. As can be seen this is just inside the non saline category at the lower end of the scale while at the same time this is very low moderate at the upper end of the scale.

Other plants tolerances will vary on the type of soil they are growing in. Atriplex amnicola though its tolerances are rated at extreme the variation is from 25dS/m to 50dS/m on alkaline duplex soils, and up to 38dS/m on medium to heavy clays.

Other variations vary on the plant genes themselves with plants in one area being quite tolerant while plants naturally growing in another area have rather low tolerances.

Soil moisture content will also have an effect on the plants tolerances for optimum growth with saline levels increasing in driersoils and decreasing as the moisture level increases. Assuming that rain water is the only variable in the soil moisture variations.

The salt levels around the coast of Australia will change, based on how much water evaporates and how much river water enters the environment. Coastal land formations and ocean currents will have a lesser affect on the salinities but still play an important function in many areas. Salt water that contains sea life must contain an appropriate amount of salt whether it is Sodium chloride (Table salt) or other chlorides. Normal sea water around the Australian coast varies from less than 20,000 parts per million at the outer edge of the Clarence River delta and can rise to saline levels of 35,000 parts per million (3.5mm pure salt by weight) during drought conditions off shore away from the deltas. Where there are enclosed harbours with high evaporation levels similar to what occurs in Sharks Bay Western Australia, the water can be over 40,000 parts per million salts and will still support most ecosystems. You can easily measure the salinity of sea/ocean water using an instrument called a refractometer, which measures the index of refraction of a particular substance. It is a device used in geology, medicine and agriculture.

Non saline sites are considered to be less than (<)499 parts of salt per million.

Slightly saline sites are considered to be from 500 to 999 parts of salt per million.

Moderately saline sites are considered to be from 1,000 to 1,999 parts of salt per million.

Very saline sites are considered to be from 2,000 to 2,999 parts of salt per million.

Extremely saline sites are considered to be greater than (>)3,000 parts of salt per million.

Plants in Colour under comments have been tested by us in the field in what we considered average conditions for that plant.Estimated salinities using similar environments & habitats, Plant associations with growing with other plants where the salinity tolerances of those plants were known, Epiphytes and lithophytes were taken as non saline away from the coast or slightly saline close to the coast where they may be affected by salt laden winds.

How to Deal with Saline water: How to Deal with Saline water: First I will deal with some of the problems of how to deal with watering and bore water that is saline.

Let’s look at good watering practices versus bare soils with low carbon.

* A garden that receives too much water will lose over 3 times the amount of water than an adequately watered garden on a very hot summer’s day. That can add up to over 1,500 liters for a 100 square meter garden every day the weather turns hot.

* Frequent light watering is wasted water. More water evaporates from the surface than at depths and is used by the plants.

* Light watering coupled with high evaporation leads to higher salt levels

* The plants in an over watered garden produce soft foliage which tends to lose water more quickly and wilt sooner from stress.

* The plants produce shallow roots instead of deep feeder roots and are less drought tolerant.

* Dry sand requires approximately 25mm of rain to soak down 30mm,

* Dry loam requires approximately 45mm of rain to soak down

30mm,

* Dry clay requires approximately 65mm of rain to soak down 30mm,

* The garden tap delivers around 500 liters an hour. A 10 liter bucket will take 72 seconds to fill or about 7.2 seconds for every liter. The average sprinkler delivers about 300 liters an hour,

* Mulches protect the soil from the affects of evaporation. Mulches over a period of time make lighter and heavier soils more friable and its ability to retain water increases dramatically. The increase depend on the soil type but is between 10mm and 1000mm greater than bare earth,

* Mulches reduce weeds that can use up to 25mm of the soils water,

* Mulched soils with 30mm to 40mm of mulch retain up to 35mm more water than bare soils.

How to deal with Saline soils: This is usually a far more difficult problem to deal with as much damage has been done by the time it has been discovered.

Bottle Water versus Town water versus Rain Water on plants?

The use of rainwater for container plants is far more beneficial than most town water supplies and bottle water.

* Town water contains added dangerous chemicals like chlorine that is toxic to some plants and reacts with the soils natural chemicals increasing the level of metallic salts in the soil. This may also lead to toxicities or deficiencies of some minerals when used for over extended periods.

* Some town water supplies contain the controversial and deadly poison fluoride which again react reacts with the soils natural chemicals increasing the level of metallic salts in the soil. This may also lead to toxicities or deficiencies of some minerals when used for over extended periods.

* Water stored in plastic bottles is presently very controversial and until some in depth long term research evaluates any risks that maybe associated with them. It is probably advisable to refrain from their use.

* Water stored in plastic bottles will vary depending on the original source and the plastic involved.

* First Rain Water contains absorbed Nitrogen, and Oxygen at optimum levels.

* Rain water contains far fewer toxic chemicals and does not contain heavy metals

* Town water often contains nutrients that are leached from local soils and in a ration that the local gene pools of plants have adapted to.

I am not saying that the plastic or the water was directly involved as it may still be the salts in the water I used. What I am saying is I will stick to tank water and steer away from both bottle and Town water wherever possible.

Do not use bottle water as I have tested bottle water on sensitive indoor plants and ferns in China while writing this book. The long term consequences for the plants were disastrous. The results were so bad I have sworn off bottled water and will never drink it again. A bird dropping or two every year in Tank water is far more acceptable. Ask my plants.

Town water is high in chlorides. The addition of chlorine as a fungicide and bactericide has the affect of making soluble salts; that would normally pass through the pot more likely to adhere to containers and soil particles, thus building up to toxic levels more quickly than would be experienced under natural situations. The accumulation of dangerous salts is toxic to many plants. Often it precipitates as a white film around the bottom of the pots (Calcium chloride). In severe cases you will notice the formation of salt crystals, glistening in the sunlight.

It is not known whether it is the toxic levels of chlorine or fluoride or other chemicals or the combination affect have a synergistic outcome on my plants but to me it is taboo.

I am not saying that the plastic or the water was directly involved as it may still be the salts in the water I used. What I am saying is I will stick to tank water and steer away from both bottle and Town water wherever possible. Again a bird dropping or too every year in Tank water is far more acceptable to me than the risks of either fluoridation or chlorine. The combination with organic products to produce BPA – Bisphenol A or BPA is an  estrogen-mimicking chemical  that  has been linked to a host of serious health problems  including:

Learning and behavioral problems,

Altered immune system function,

Early puberty in girls and fertility problems,

Decreased sperm count,

Prostate and breast cancer,

Diabetes and obesity.

After all just 50 years ago smoking was claimed to be relaxing and good after a stressful day at work. Who would believe that now?

Ask my plants.

In conclusion if this is harming my plants over a period of several years what is it doing to your body over half a life time?

Town water facts:

Liver cancer is 21mm greater amongst drinkers of chlorinated water compared to those drinking Tank water.

Rectal Cancer is 38mm to 80mm greater amongst drinkers of chlorinated water compared to those drinking Tank water.

Robert D. Morris of the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, who directed the new study.

This adverse risks associated with chlorinated water must be considered against the risk of supplying large populations with potable water that is free of diseases like cholera.

Removing Salts from the Soil: This is a very expensive often long term problem. Let’s first look at the problem of excess salt in the soil. Most problems arise because of man’s interference. Irrigation water is the principle cause of salinity followed by rising water tables. Some areas on sandstone which were once submerged beneath the ocean accumulated salts like sodium chloride, boron or even iron or copper chlorides.

Let’s not underestimate the accumulation affects of salt. Irrigation water with a low salt concentration of 0.2 kg/m³ and this is on the low side for almost all Australian river and bore water. If the crops grown required an annual supply of irrigation water of 10,000 m³/ha or about 2mm/day the salts deposited on that hectare would be 2,000kg salt/ha each year. In the absence of sufficient natural drainage; as in waterlogged soils and without an expensive and adequate leaching and drainage program to remove salts, this would lead to high soil salinity and reduced blooms, growth, vitality and crop yields in the long run.

Most of Australia’s rivers and bores tested for irrigation has salt readings of 2 or 3 times higher, coupled with higher usage. Sugar cane, for example, needs about 20000 m3/ha of water per year. As a result, with salinity levels in the range of 0.6kg/m³ these irrigated areas would receive more than 12,000 kg/ha of salt per year.

The other problem exists where the water does not drain away, is used by the plants or high evaporation rates exist.

Irrigation and tree removal changes the natural water balance of the soil. Irrigated water that is not consumed by plants must go somewhere. It is impossible to achieve 100mm irrigation efficiency where all the irrigation water is consumed by the plants or drains away carrying the excess salts with it. The maximum attainable irrigation efficiency recorded on farms is about 70mm under ideal conditions but is usually less than 60mm. This means that minimum 30mm, but usually more than 40mm of the irrigation water is not consumed by the plants. So where does it go?

Most of the water lost this way is stored underground slowly penetrating into deeper layers which changes the original hydrology of local aquifers considerably. Many aquifers cannot absorb and transport this extra water, thus the water table rises leading to water logged soils.

Waterlogged soils causes three major problems:

*The high water table severely reduces the amount of oxygen available in the root zone of trees followed by shrubs and finally annuals which lead to reduced yields in most crops.

*The accumulation of salts deposited with the irrigation water is now accumulating as their removal through the aquifer is unable to be discharged.

* The rise in water tables results in salts already accumulated ate the lower levels  now being transported to the surface which really can exasperate the situation.Drainage is the primary method of controlling soil salinity.

Drainage is the primary method of controlling soil salinity. The system should permit a small fraction of the irrigation water. 10 to 20 percent, of the drainage or leaching fraction as it is known should be drained and discharged out of the irrigation project. J.W. van Hoorn and J.G. van Alphen (2006), Salinity Control.

In irrigated areas where salinity is stable, the salt concentration of the drainage water is normally 5 to 10 times higher than that of the irrigation water. That is the volume of salt deposited matches the volume of salt removed creating a balance.

When reclaiming already salinity problem soils, the salt concentration of the drainage water can be as high as 50 times that of the deposited salts. After one or two years, the soil salinity is decreased so much, that the salinity of the drainage water has come down to a normal value and a new, favorable, equilibrium is reached.

In regions with defined dry and wet seasons , the drainage system may be operated in the wet season only, and closed during the dry season.

The disadvantage of the discharge drainage water system is it will create environmental problems to downstream uses, areas and water tables which may receive up to 50 times the amount of salt deposited than was previously deposited. The short and long term environmental hazards must be considered very carefully and, if necessary mitigating measures must be taken. These additional measures coupled with the original drainage works are expensive and personally other methods are far more favourable.

* Micro jets at night will go a long way in diluting salts in the soil. The very fine mist that is sprayed usually 6 to 12 litres an hour is most beneficial in areas where orographic precipitation occurs or where fogs are experienced. This method was applied on our orchard to great affect in the early days. As the mist is jettisoned it collects droplets of water in the fog which contributes to the amount of water delivered to the plants. Added to this as the droplets fall to the ground a lower atmospheric pressure is developed in the spray area which causes more moist air to flow into the area and this in return is collected by the spray droplets and added to the soil. It was estimated that on a good night we collected over 50mm more water than what was pumped to the orchard 10 litters an hour for 6 hours meant we gained an extra 30 litters of pure salt free water a tree for nothing. That is a 50mm saving in fuel, wear and tear and environmental friendly. Our water was tested at 200m parts per million salt but with the additional moisture the equivalent was reduced to less than 133 parts per million. There is also less evaporation at night meaning more of the water is delivered to the soil.

The disadvantage with micro jets is they require a good filtration system and ants just love the nozzles for collecting water and nesting. This meant that we often had to spend hours cleaning the jets out after a wet period when the sprinklers were not in use. Before using the micro jets it is a good idea to open the ends of the pipes and let the first flow run out of the pipes ants and all. This will save about half the work in cleaning nozzles out.

* Phytoremediation is another very useful tool for removing salt from your soil and giving it to someone else. How it works is that you grow a salt tolerant crop and sell the product. In the early days on our orchard we had severe boron salt problems in one section that required immediate attention. The choices we had was remove the plants and allow the land to lay bare or plant a crop that relished the salt. Beetroot was the answer. We planted beetroot, Beta vulgaris was planted around the trees and inter rows for the next 2 years. The results were amazing the stunted trees that were previously discarding yellow leaves with brown spots ceased and grew normally production rose and we were paid handsomely for the organic beetroot that went to market. Phytoremediation is a powerful tool that should not be underestimated on the farm or garden. Beetroot also looks very attractive in a flower bed.

The disadvantage of Phytoremediation it can be a very slow process taking as long as 10 or more years to remove the problematic salt.

* Salt Tolerant Specie are another method to help overcome salt toxicities. This method relies on selecting the plants that have the salt tolerances to grow on a particular area or particular aspect. Atriplex specie generally grow well on drier soils with higher salt concentrates.

* Reduce watering by growing plants that grow within the rainfall parameters and soil parameters. Only grow Melaleuca quinquinervia on wet or water logged sites, Eucalyptus curtisii on sandy shales that are well drained with rainfalls of 900mm to 1400mm annually.

* Grow plants that rely on the lower end of natural rainfall experienced in your district, soil type, aspect and topography.

* Mulch is a very affective way of reducing watering by as much as 80mm and has been dealt with under Organic Growing made Easy.

* Strip Cropping has been suggested as another method to reduce salt levels in an area. I believe this only defers the underlying problem as the salt deposits are retained in the soil and in fact maybe spread over a larger area on the farm or property. Strip farming can be useful if other methods are being applied where the results may take several years to take affect. It has use for the removal of salt through phytoremediation if the overall farm management practices are not changed to reduce salt levels.

With the use of mulch, reduced watering, the growing of the correct specie there should be no need to worry about costly alternative salinity reduction.
